Lucky to have my hands on Maruti 800

Maruti Suzuki launched the 800 back in 1983 which run successfully till 2013 as Maruti was loosing the sales number as well as the profit that's why they finally stopped the production after many face-lifts were introduced. The first Maruti 800 was based on the Suzuki Fronte. Maruti 800 has a-lot of history, you can just Google it out or if you want me to tell then comment down below about this.

Talking about the engine, it was a 4-cylinder 800 cc motor paired with 4-speed gearbox (Later 5-speed) which used to produce 37 bhp of power & the kerb weight was 600+ kgs.

I feel very lucky to drive this "Millionaire" as Maruti 800 was sold at about 2.88 million in its lifespan. I've been looking for to drive some of the old cars fortunately my friend does own one. My first impression, it was compact & the design language is just superb, the square shaped headlights & the black color bumper with the indicators inscribed, (Maruti has provided it in Vitara Brezza) totally mesmerized my eyes. Opening the hood, the small magic motor houses in a small area with lot of free space to fit in a 2.0 L Petrol engine!

The center positioned number plate (Later shifted on bumper) with the rectangular block shaped tail-lights gave it a modern look back then. Maruti has provided hydraulic struts for the boot door, that's a cool thing for the convenience of the people.

The 12-inch steel wheels looks small but is enough to deliver good mileage with the performance too. The big windows on the side which has to be brought up manually when the A/C been switched on. Yes! this car has A/C that time & it cooled down the cabin in just 5 minutes. There weren't any speakers on the doors but the company fitted audio system were good. The seats doesn't have much cushion but the space in the front seat as well as in the rear seat is enough to accommodate a 5.5' tall person. The headroom was decent & the under-thigh support isn't lacking much.

Talking about the practicality of the car, frankly speaking there aren't any spaces to house bottles or to keep anything, was only the glove box to accommodate that. The 177 L boot space was big enough to store at-least 2 suitcases side-by-side.

Now, comes the most interesting thing, driving. Starting the engine, idling around 800-1000 rpm but the engine is so silent that you barely listen to any noise inside the cabin, a big clap for Suzuki. Putting it into the 1st gear was tough as gears aren't very slick but the pick up was like hell! It gave me kick-in-the-pants feel & the acceleration was frugal as it was tending to touch the red-line although the top-end doesn't have much to give but the mid-range was good for a city centric car. There were screaming noises from the engine in the top-end but I liked that sound. My friend's car returns a mileage of about 15 kmpl, it was so well maintained by him.

Ending my review of the "Legend", speaking in one-line. No such features on-offer that time but high on comfort & drivability. The car was being priced around Rs. 2.28 Lakhs. This was real fun to drive.
